song # 12 now has a title – where is the sun? – along with lyrics and a couple of guitar overdubs since the first demo. I think it’s about half way there – some of the vocals were done in a couple of takes and sound a little rough. The lyrics might need a bit of polish and the mix needs to be tightened (there’s a lot going on in the chorus) but overall some solid progress.

this song has been a bit of a challenge – the verse and chorus parts are quite different so it has been difficult to mesh them together. anyway, after lots of trial and error, here’s the latest rough mix of song # 11 – now titled Open Your Eyes.
the bass and drum parts are a little different and so are the guitars. there are some horns and organs added throughout. I only recorded one take of the vocals so they are a bit pitchy and rough and will no doubt be improved upon.
at the moment the song plays out for a couple of minutes at the end – that bit will either be edited down or will feature some new guitar overdubs. you’ll just have to wait and see . . . . .
and now for something completely different . . . .
I originally wrote this song way back in 1993 (!) but have never made a proper recording of it until now. Originally it was slow and kind of bluesy and for some reason I sang it in some sort of Nick Cave meets Jim Morrison voice. Here’s a demo I recorded in 1993 – guitar, bass, drums and vocals recorded on a Yamaha MT-100 4 track recorder.
I Wasn’t Born Yesterday (1993 demo)
In 2007 when we were shortlisting songs for the 2nd SSA record, I recorded a new demo. This one was uptempo and the vocal was an octave higher in pitch.
song 8
and so onto song # 8. sorry for the delay since our last post – rehearsing for the recent show kept us from working on the next song but don’t worry, we’re about to get you caught up real fast. t
this time a first – David Bos came to me with some guitar chords he’d written, which turned out to be the basis for our next song. here’s the demo he recorded in his home studio, with just him on guitars and tambourine:
from there, I rearranged things a little and overdubbed some bass and drums and wrote a new bridge and vocal melody. the lyrics you’ll hear on the demo below were improvised stream-of-consciousness “placeholders” designed to hear how the melody sounded and nothing more. what can I say, the lyrics suck but it’s how I work
finally, we have a rough mix which uses the 2nd demo as a foundation. there are new guitar overdubs by David (3-4 tracks) and a new bass overdub along with some acoustic guitar and mandolin by me. all that’s missing now are the lyrics. stay tuned . . .
Can You Feel?
song # 7 now has a title – Can You Feel?
check out an updated mix below – we now have rough vocals, albeit with some first draft lyrics and a structure that isn’t quite there yet.
here’s the first rough mix of song # 6 – Bottom Of The Sea. what you hear on this version is guitar, bass and drums. more to come soon . . . .
song # 4 progress
here’s a new rough mix of song # 4:
as you can see no title yet. no vocals yet either but musically it’s starting to take shape. I’m thinking this is more of a “kitchen sink” mix where everything’s on the table – eventually I’ll probably try and condense it a little but that’ll be a lot easier once the vocals are in place. as always, I welcome your comments and ideas!
